The Joshua Tree National Park is one of the points of pride of California, named after the majestic Joshua tree that is present in the park. It is linked to many divine connections, which is one of the many reasons that people from all over the world are willing to take this trip to that specific park.

The beauty of this Joshua tree is that with the different positions of the sun during the day makes the tree to always take various forms depending on where you are viewing it from. It, however, all depends on you, because what one person will see and understand is not similar to what the other person will see.

For the longest time, the majority of the people who come to the park either for leisure or just sightseeing always end up getting motivated to do something. The different views and the unexplainable weather of that place always makes people have revelations of some sort. That is why many artists usually take their time and visit the Joshua Tree National Park, more so for a camp, before they can produce their next work.

The park is open all year round but then the weather of the place, determines what you can and cannot do.

How to get to the park

The park is strategically located in California with a reasonable distance from most of the towns around it. It is 215 miles from Vegas, 175 miles from San Diego and 140 miles from Los Angeles. This, therefore, gives you quite a beautiful drive to the park.

There are several entrances to the park. You could use the West Entrance that can be accessed from the Palm Springs through to the Park Boulevard at the Joshua Tree Village. There is North Entrance that is 3 miles for the town of Twentynine palms and the south entrance where you take the exit 168 east of Indio.

If you happen to be in a different town, you could fly to one of the cities of your choice and then take a driving route to the park. You should, however, have a specific vehicle to use or a trusted travel agency to help you get to the park.

Recommended activities

1. Hiking

The rock formations ensure that there are plenty of exciting trails and walks that are being used by many people all the time. There will be guided hikes if you are going to some of the risk zones, but then there are some that you can go alone.

The Indian Cove and the Echo Cave are some of the prime hiking destinations that you should not dare miss while you there. It might not fall in the ‘every level ability’ like most places, but it is something like taking a look at. You should, however, ensure that you have good shoes that will enable you to walk through the terrains without getting hurt.

2. Rock Climbing

The park has some granitic rock formations that have made it so much easier for climbers to enjoy hikes there. It has over 8000 climbing routes and 400 structures that make it very hard for you to exhaust all of them. It always gives you a reason to go back there.

There are trained people who will guide you, more so if you are a first-time rock climber. It is always highly advised that you should not try to be a hero and go for it unsupervised. It might just be the call of your death or a dangerous trip to the emergency ward. However, it is one of the most exciting activities that you should try while you are in the park.

3. Astronomy discoveries

The night sky in the park is quite impressive. It exposes you to so many stars that you may have never even seen in your life. Despite the usual air pollution, the night sky usually remains so bright and so refreshing. That is why every Saturday night, there are events that generally take place when it is almost close to the full moon.

The nights during these days are unexplainable and unbelievable. It is also one of the most amazing places to have a romantic rendezvous with your significant other. You will even be in a perfect position to take so many pictures to remind you of your visit to that place.

4. Take a drive through the park

The park is roughly a 50-mile distance that you can cover in one and a half hours. However, you can opt to use this chance to enjoy what nature has for you instead of just vrooming past the park. It could even take you one whole day just for you to finish going around the park.

If you are in Palm Springs, you could follow the path from Cottonwoods visitor center and follow a map through to the end of the park. You will enjoy the desert oasis like the Lost Palms and the bubbling spring, the old Mastodon goldmine.

5. The night sky festival

Every year, Joshua Tree Park has been given the honor of hosting the annual Night Sky festival that happens in September. It is usually located in the Limit Nature Center and Observatory which will host music performances, constellation tours, and many sky stories.

Before the night, the visitors get to enjoy astrology lectures, youth crafts, nature walks, and solar viewing, among others, to get you into the full Night Sky experience mood. These activities are not only offered during the night festival but all year round. You will find telescopes mounted on the roofs and films running that expose the universe to you

6. Bird’s migration

This is one of the most amazing activities that you should make time and see. However, it only takes place during spring when there is so much blooming taking place in the park. If you happen to be a bird lover, you should know that you will find species like roadrunners, Gamble’s Quail and the wrens among the many others that happen to migrate to the park.

You may also see the intriguing turkey vultures who roost at the Oasis of the Mara during the spring. It is quite a memorable experience.

Places to eat

As a human, food is one of the significant parts of our lives. Even when you are on holiday, you will still need to eat. The only difference will be the quality of the food you will want to eat. At the Joshua Tree National Park, you have the chance to enjoy both good food and impressive scenery.

1. Pappy and Harriet’s

This is one of the places where you see meat being grilled in the open. It is one of those kinds of those garden barbeque places. It, however, means that when they turn out several high, foods may take longer than usual for it to reach you. You will have to learn to be patient here.

It is one of the most common places that have very many people coming to eat there. Meaning if you want to enjoy your meal, you will have to reserve weeks in advance. There are two sets of seating that are allowed, one from 5-5.30 and 7. If you are planning to eat any other time, you might find the place closed.

2. 29 Palms Inn

Most people have a habit of enjoying even more exceptional meals and situations when they are on holiday. If you are looking for such a case, then the 29 Palms Inn is your go-to place. You will not regret the meal, wine selection, and even the arrangement of entertainment that they offer their guests. The exclusivity, however, does not include a reservation, so it is the first-come-first-serve basis.

They have brunch times for those who like some friendly chats over a cup of tea. This is between the hours of 9 am and 2 pm. It is, however, open from 5 pm to 9.30 pm, with lunch open from 11 am to 2 pm every other day. You must know the times for you to be able to enjoy

3. Cali Green Café

If you happen to be passing by, this could be one of the high places that you will arrive to enjoy. They don’t concentrate on very exquisite meals but deal with dull day to day meals. You will get a good selection of breakfast and lunch dishes which happen to be edible by most people. You can also get a vegetarian option for you to eat.

This place is generally open all week long except Sundays from 7 am to 6 pm. It is the perfect drive through café for you.

4. Royal Siam Thai Restaurant

This is one of the amazing Thai food that you will find in the park. They also offer some fantastic vegetarian dishes if you prefer them. Several people have also assured me of the great tofu that they offer. Definitely with no eggs on them.

If you have never had a taste of the Thai culture, this could be one of the many other exciting adventures that you could add to your list. Try out the many types of dishes and learn the reasons why they cook some foods in specific ways.

5. Natural Sister’s Café

This is a vegetarian cafe that offers road trip snacks and healthy drinks. You will, therefore, find salads, sandwiches, and smoothies available at any time. They have this fantastic egg wrap that is best for your breakfast with a cup of tea or some freshly pressed juice. For lunch, you can have some chopped salad, but only if you are not that hungry. It will then act as a starter for a more substantial meal for you.

Accommodation facilities

The Joshua tree Park has several camping grounds with more than 500 campsites open all year round. However, between September and May, you are allowed to reserve camp spaces for you, unlike most of the other months of the year. You are even allowed to book six months in advance.

If you opt for a hotel, the best option will be at the Palm Springs which offers spaces for families. You could also try the Pioneertown Motel or Twentynine Palms. It is advised that you visit their websites and compare their prices as well as the facilities that they have before you opt for a hotel you will like to stay in.

There is also the option of staying at a trailer park — several trailers are surrounding a swimming pool and the Kate’s Lazy desert Airstream Hotel. Many people opt for this to add spice to their adventure. You should, however, be in a group if you are choosing to stay in this place. The security may be confirmed, but you should never take chances. It would also be more fun staying in a trailer and having bonfire nights with friends than all alone.

Final word

The Joshua Tree National Park, apart from its amazing recreational activities, it also offer crazy learning abilities that now only leave you knowledgeable about the flora and fauna in the park, but also the astronomy world that shines during the night. You also get to have exquisite time walking or driving around the place with your friends, family or even on your own if you were making a research trip. You should, however, be aware that some agencies may not completely guide you well when you need this trip. Before trying out a hiking group, ask around about other groups offering the same, then choose the one that suits you better. The trip should be an amazing one. Try it out anytime.
